Groningen, the sixth largest city in the Netherlands, boasts the highest percentage of bike usage in the world. 57% of trips are made by bike. Why so many? Because of progressive urban planning and transporation policies. In 1977, a six lane highway intersection in the center of town was replaced by greenery, bike paths, and bus lanes. The city is also split into four sections. Cars must take a road on the periphery to travel from one sector to another, while bikes are free to travel throughout the city.
