Hi Abby! I saw your article in Yes! magazine and thought, "Hmm...I wonder if that's the Abby Quillen (daughter of Ed) I worked with so many years ago at the Tattered Cover?" Just wanted to say hi, and love what you're doing out there. Hope all is well with you.

I've gathered some of MY favorite blogs from your links. Thank you! I too have been honing down. We all know how promising blogs sometimes aren't so wonderful after awhile.

Here are my additions.

I love to get ideas from Robinsunne. She's a mixed media artist with lots of tutorials on her blog http://sunnespot.blogspot.com/

I adore the way Laura Weldon helps me live more mindfully and hopefully through her blog http://lauragraceweldon.com/blog-2/

And I keep up with progressive education via Institute for Humane Education's blog http://humaneconnectionblog.blogspot.com/

I have taken over this line of work for the 2011 Holiday season and am currently delivering primarily in the Friendly Street neighborhood of Eugene, OR.

It's a relatively fun and easy job. There are a few hills where I am, but as someone who lives to mountain bike, I don't mind them what so ever!

Details about the job are : UPS hires seasonal people every year, some will do deliveries by bike, others will help out drivers. I was loaned a cheap mountain bike and a cheap trailer and taught very briefly on what to do. But was given a few useful phone numbers and for the first few days was regularly calling when I faced a problem with the DIAD (the electronic gizmo) or getting something done. For the first few days, it took me around 2 hours to get about 30 packages delivered. Today, I had quite a bit more (3x-4x the amount I previously was given) and it took me nearly double the time. I will get faster as I learn the trade I imagine.

I believe I am using the EXACT set-up as in your picture.

A lot of people are very curious to if I actually work for UPS. Others stop and encourage my efforts to deliver by bike. Most are happy UPS is doing something "green". What they don't know is I am making minimum wage which is nothing compared to a full-time person.

The decision to contract out bikes for the holidays is likely only a marketing scheme. We deliver a bit slower, but save gas. UPS earns a "greener" image and also saves a lot of money by not having a full-time employee out there.

That being said, I'm loving being a pedaled powered Santa for the time being!

Have been using my bicycle almost exclusively for two months; my choice. I live in Los Angeles and at first I was pretty intimidated by the traffic. Now, I'm getting used to it. Have lost thirty pounds feel great and don't miss the car which I use only when absolutely necessary.

Tomorrow I am going to the farmers market, in the rain ! I was inspired by your story ! Happy spinning.

Richard age 64, retired and loving it.
